Thank you!!!

Sligo Pride 2023 was a success, and we have our wonderful community to thank for it. To all that attended, all that marched with us, our partners, our vendors, our sponsors, our venues, our committee, our friends… THANK YOU!

This year, we wanted to have some fun and engage with the community as a whole, not only LGBTQIA+. We achieved that. Gaymes Day in Serious Business was at full capacity. Bookmart’s Illumination saw record attendance on it’s 10th anniversary. Karaoke Pink Friday mingled the queer folx and the Whiplash Festival attendees. The local commerce coloured their windows for our parade through town. And Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Model was the cherry on top. Over all, it was a love fest for 5 days.

For your love and support, we are deeply grateful. We will take a few weeks off to rest, but soon we will be back with more events for us to enjoy each others company not only every August, but all year long. Keep an eye on our Instagram @sligopridefestival for more updates.

Hazelwood Yoga & Walk!!!

Join us for a delightful Sunday morning in nature. We will gather on Hazelwood Forest, in the beach by Lough Gill for a relaxing session of Yoga at 9:30am, guided by the lovely Tara from Sligo Yoga Centre. After that, at 11am we will go for a walk through the Hazelwood Forest tracks. No better way to enjoy the marvellous nature of Sligo. Free admission. Book your space in the yoga session at linktr.ee/sligopride

Public Statement – Sligo Pride Committee 2023

First of all, we would like to thank the community for inviting us to the gathering that was intended for 21/07/23. We originally intended to make a statement when the situation was resolved, but due demand for an explanation, we have decided to post this. With this statement we hope to shed some light on Sligo Pride 2023, its committee formation, and its decision-making process, and clear up any questions.

On April 19th 2023, a few members of the Sligo LGBTQIA+ community gathered for the first time since the previous committee met in October 2022. On this meeting the then acting chair resigned from their position and a provisional committee was formed, with duties and roles expiring at the upcoming Annual General Meeting. The AGM was set for 11th May, and a community wide call to participate was published on Sligo Pride website, Instagram, and Twitter accounts. The AGM had a quorum of 8 people, who were proposed and seconded for all committee positions available. On the same occasion, the previous treasurer presented a financial handout, and a plan was set for the organisation of Sligo Pride 2023. Counting executive committee and ordinary committee members, the committee operated up till now with 10 active members working towards Sligo Pride 2023. All procedures established in the Sligo Pride Constitution were adhered to, as they will continue to be.

Through the past three months, Sligo Pride kept its doors open for participation of the community, but it was not until the volunteer call was advertised has it received any expression of interest. This is a non-surprising situation, considering the historical volatility of Sligo Pride as a community group, which continuously results in a lack of continuity between annual Pride iterations. As a properly formed committee, we chose to ignore this history and work hard to promote Sligo Pride, not only as an event, but as an expression that portion of our community still cares for this event. We would like to reiterate: our doors are open for anyone who wants to help and contribute. The series of events established by this committee still requires work to be done and any assistance is more than welcome.

To directly address the issue that this meeting has been set up to address: A member of the Sligo LGBTQIA+ community has come forward and shared their experience. Following the Constitution, the executive committee, as they have done in the past, took a vote and made a decision. All parties in question were informed of the decision and invited to make contact on this. This contact is now being established. As a committee we will not speak on behalf of an individual, and nor will we comment on an ongoing situation, but to provide an update, we have contacted all parties involved and they have agreed to meet. We hope that this situation, like every situation similar, can be resolved in a way that leaves us a more united and stronger community.

In terms of our decision making process, we have looked back to previous iterations of the committee and followed the precedence that was set before us. We as a committee have a conversation when decisions are to be made, and then take a vote to make a decision. While we cannot account for absolutely everything, we will do our best to ensure the community feels heard and represented by the organisers of the pride festival. We cannot deny at the end of the day we are all human, and whilst we do our best to be as transparent as possible in public posts and communications, the best way to get involved in and find out how our process works is to join Sligo Pride.

We keep working on Sligo Pride 2023 because we believe this community, in spite of its differences, deserves a Pride to unite and celebrate. A sentiment we are sure you share. While we donate our time, energy and mental health to this community, we try to keep our focus on the events and in providing a safe place for expression and inclusion for this long-harmed community. Any behaviour contrary to the benefit of our community will not be tolerated by us. We will use diplomacy and above all the truth to defend this event, this committee and this community. For this we will continue to work.

We don’t seek social justice or a continued exchange of accusations. We hope this statement reflects our position to the community we love and work to unite.
